(ENG) This crater has a very singular formation. According to some, the impactor came at grazing angle from the East forming the first oval crater (Messier A), than bounced to form the second. The name given to these craters appears very appropriate for the great comet-seeker Charles Messier. A wicked but tasty story, reported by Stephen James O’Meara and showing Messier’s devotion to astronomy, deserves to be quoted. Messier was anticipated in the discovery of a comet by Montaigne de Limoges (which he was in competion with) also because his wife’s death, occurred in the same period. A friend wanted to consolate him for his loss, so Messier started yelling at Montaigne, who had stolen his comet. After a while, realizing the friend was talking about the wife, he sighed: “ah, the poor woman!” and kept complaining about the comet.
